[1:15]  1 tn Grk “a second grace,” “a second favor” (used figuratively of a second visit by Paul).

[1:23]  2 tn Grk “I call upon God as witness against my soul.” Normally this implies an appeal for help (L&N 33.176).

[1:23]  3 tn Here φειδόμενος (feidomeno") has been translated as a telic participle.

[1:23]  4 sn Paul had promised to come again to visit (see 2 Cor 1:15, 24) but explains here why he had changed his plans.

[1:23]  map For location see JP1 C2; JP2 C2; JP3 C2; JP4 C2.

[2:14]  5 tn Or “who always causes us to triumph.”

[2:14]  6 tn Or “in the Messiah.”

[2:14]  7 tn Or “who reveals.”

[6:9]  8 tn Grk “disciplined,” but in this context probably a reference to scourging prior to execution (yet the execution is not carried out).

[7:2]  9 tn The phrase “in your hearts” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.

[7:2]  10 tn “We have ruined no one” may refer to financial loss (“we have caused no one to suffer financial loss”) but it may also refer to the undermining of faith (“we have corrupted no one’s faith,”). Both options are mentioned in L&N 20.23.

[7:2]  11 tn Or “we have taken advantage of no one.”

[8:2]  12 tn Or “riches.”

[8:17]  13 tn The comparative form of this adjective is used here with elative meaning.

[8:17]  14 tn This verb has been translated as an epistolary aorist.

[8:17]  15 tn Or “of his own free will.”

[8:23]  16 tn Grk “If concerning Titus” (εἴτε ὑπὲρ Τίτου, eite Juper Titou); the Greek sentence opens with an ellipsis which must be supplied: If [there is any question] about Titus.”

[8:23]  17 tn Grk “apostles.”

[10:10]  18 tn Or “unimpressive.”

[10:10]  19 tn Or “is contemptible”; Grk “is despised.”

[11:3]  20 tn Grk “I fear lest somehow.”

[11:3]  21 tn Or “the snake.”

[11:3]  22 tn Or “craftiness.”

[11:3]  23 tn Or “corrupted,” “seduced.”

[11:3]  24 tc Although most mss (א2 H Ψ 0121 0243 1739 1881 Ï) lack “and pure” (καὶ τῆς ἁγνότητος, kai th" Jagnothto"; Grk “and purity”) several important and early witnesses (Ì46 א* B D[2] F G 33 81 104 pc ar r co) retain these words. Their presence in such mss across such a wide geographical distribution argues for their authenticity. The omission from the majority of mss can be explained by haplography, since the -τητος ending of ἁγνότητος is identical to the ending of ἁπλότητος (Japlothto", “sincerity”) three words back (ἁπλότητος καὶ τῆς ἁγνότητος); further, since the meanings of “sincerity” and “purity” are similar they might seem redundant. A copyist would scarcely notice the omission because Paul’s statement still makes sense without “and from purity.”

[12:12]  25 tn Or “patience,” “endurance.”

[12:12]  26 tn Or “and miracles.”

[13:1]  27 tn The word “visit” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.

[13:1]  28 tn Grk “By the mouth.”

[13:1]  29 sn A quotation from Deut 19:15 (also quoted in Matt 18:16; 1 Tim 5:19).
